Corporate Translation Memories

Corporate Translation Memories

All translations that are created and approved in the company are recorded in corporate translation memories. Translation memories pool the company’s expertise as well as previous investment in translation. All source and target language text modules are stored in language pairs, irrespective of their original format. This guarantees that previously translated and reviewed content is never translated a second time; every text module is purchased only once.

All texts to be translated must be tag-free, defragmented and granulated in order to achieve the highest possible matching rates – both when reusing existing translations and in future translation projects.
alfaloc language technology has developed proprietary solutions that optimise all content for translation, regardless of the translation tool used, and convert only the new text modules for translation into a tabular translation file. Content is therefore independent of format and platform, and can be reused by all participating divisions and departments in any format, as often as required.

Corporate Translation Memories are a Company’s Property and Capital

Corporate translation memories should never be used or edited directly by vendors or reviewers. Access should be restricted to authorised administrators in the company. This form of centralised translation memory management is intended to ensure that only approved final text modules are added to the translation memories, thereby guaranteeing the highest level of quality.

The reason for this is the fact that numerous corrections and changes are made to translated texts during the review process. In other words, the review cycle produces multiple new versions of the same source text. If these changes were made directly in the corporate translation memories, they would result in countless inconsistencies and fuzzy matches, which would affect the reuse rate as well as the quality of the translation memories. Reliable quality assurance would therefore no longer be achievable.

For this reason, all vendors involved in a translation project should receive only a specific project translation memory (TM), which contains all relevant extracts from the corresponding corporate translation memory. After the translation has been finalised, this project TM remains with the vendor and is not reloaded into the central corporate translation Memory.

Once all of the necessary review cycles for the target language layout files have been completed and the final content has been approved, alignment is performed on the basis of the original source and the final target language file, whereby all text modules are once again recorded in language pairs.
This content is then imported into the corporate translation memories by an administrator and approved for further use.

Further Use of Corporate Translation Memories

A central corporate content wiki can also be created on the basis of the corporate translation memories. This type of online reference with role-based access permissions makes it easier to create new documents across multiple departments and locations and ensures compliance with the corporate language as well as consistent branding throughout the company.

Along with the complete text modules of the corporate translation memories, additional relevant information can be added to this knowledge base, such as terminology, style guides, etc.
This type of reference is recommended for international companies with locations distributed worldwide. We will be happy to advise you on the wide range of options available.
